Which camera would you recommend?

I have enough experience with cameras, I had some small, poor digital cameras (Kodak and Pentax) and I was not convinced. I want pictures of high quality, professional look, as if the object is defined and the background is blurred and indistinct take? Is that logical? Anyway, I’m sure I want a small digital camera. What brands do you recommend, what is the range of prices, tips for taking professional looking photos? Thank you!
