EF is Electro Focus (FF Autofocus)
    EF-S (APS-C Autofocus)
    USM – Ultrasonic Motor
    L just means expensive ;-)

Just funnin’. . . L is good glass. L glass is available in both Telephoto and Wide angle.

That is a link to a site with the info about Canon’s lenses. And just in case you might look at any Tamron or Sigma lenses, here are the designations explained:

    Lens Designations – Sigma

    APO – Apochromatic lens element(s)

OS – In lens “Optical Stabilization”, analogous to Nikon VR or Canon IS

HSM – “HyperSonic Motor”, in-lens ultrasonic motor, analogous to Nikon AF-S or Canon USM, etc

    EX – “Excellence”, professional series.

DG – Coatings optimized for Digital SLRs, still usable on 35mm or full frame

DC – Lenses for DSLRs featuring APS-C size sensors only

DF – “Dual Focus”, lens features clutch to disengage focus ring when in AF mode

HF – “Helical Focusing”, front element of lens does not rotate (for when using circular polarizing filters)

    Lens Designations – Tamron

Di – “Digitally Integrated”, featuring coating optimized for digital SLRs, but still usable on 35mm or full frame

Di II – Lenses for DSLRs with APS-C sized sensors only

SP – “Super Performance”, professional lenses

    IF – “Internal Focus”

    LD – “Low Dispersion” elements

XR – Extra Refractive Index glass

VC – “Vibration Compensation”, in lens stabilization

I compiled these two for Tamron and Sigma on my own some time ago when no one could answer this for me.

And as for which are good lenses, you will basically know by how much you pay for them if they are new. I would venture a guess that the only good lens Canon offers for less than $200 would be the 50mm f/1. 8 Otherwise, you are going to be looking at more money for a good lens.

You can find good used lenses on craigslist or auction sites (on sites like ebay make sure you read all the fine print). Just check the lenses value on a site like the B&H website in the used section to make sure you aren’t paying more than you should.
